Chapter Thirteen

Zinnia cringed inwardly. She’d let her emotions get the better of her—again. If Tyson didn’t think she was a blubbering idiot before, now he most certainly did. Why couldn’t she just keep it together? Sam had taken her to the restaurant multiple times after he’d proposed. Why did the memory of that one special night suddenly come to the surface now?

She sat on her hands and forced herself not to look at Tyson. She could feel his eyes on her more than once as they made their way toward the outskirts of town. The only eating establishments out that way were fast food joints and gas stations. Tyson seemed so excited, she didn’t want to ruin this night further.

Zinnia nibbled on her lower lip as she allowed scarier thoughts to encroach on her mind. She’d admitted she was ready for more. Had Tyson noticed that? It bubbled out of her mouth before she could hold it back. The more she dwelled on it, the more she admitted she’d spoken the truth. Tyson was sweet. He made her feel more alive than she had in months. Not to mention that kiss.

Her lips pressed together, the tingling returning. No matter how much she argued with herself over the matter, Tyson had in fact awoken something in her. She peeked at him out of the corner of her eye. His arm lay on the armrest and his hand had settled on the gear shift. The nerves in her hand itched to touch him—to lace her fingers between his.

Heat filled her face and she turned to look out the window as the sun began its descent behind the hills. Wouldn’t it be nice if Tyson felt the same way? Her heart fluttered. Even if he wasn’t ready to be in a relationship, her thoughts were dragging her to the realization she could move on to something new with someone else. It wouldn’t disrespect her marriage, and Sam wouldn’t want her to stop living. He’d want someone he counted as a friend to raise his child. She was sure of that. Other people might think it was too soon, but this was her decision to make.

A quiet, peaceful stillness encompassed her. Yes, Sam would want her to be happy. He would have never wanted her to become a cold and lonely widow woman. This date with Tyson was the first step to moving forward.

Tyson pulled onto a dirt road. Zinnia’s brows furrowed. “There’s nothing out here.”

He smiled and grabbed her hand. He brought her knuckles to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss to her hand. “Patience.”

She snorted. “Says the least patient man I have ever met.”

His amused expression disappeared for only a moment before he shrugged. “I can be patient when it matters.” Tyson dropped her hand and grabbed the steering wheel. He turned off onto another dirt path.

They drove for another ten minutes until they came up to a clearing with at least a dozen trucks and SUVs. A few yards away, a group of men in cowboy hats surrounded a large pile of wood.
